Food Collectors collect food from local suppliers, and private donations, sort and place the produce in the fridge or shelving as appropriate. Collections are from the Littlehampton areas, as far as Bognor (Shripney), Barnham, Arundel and Durrington and Goring-on-Sea, with occasional collections from further afield. We ask that you could commit to doing a regular food collection every week (which may include more than one pick up on route), although it is useful to have volunteers available at short notice for occasional one-off collections, and cover sickness and holidays..
The Food Collector role involves:
We will provide full training, so no previous experience is required.
You do need to be physically fit, have good communication and literacy skills and be able to use your initiative and work independently. You will also need to have access to a vehicle to transport the food.
A positive attitude, enthusiasm and dedication to reducing food waste and helping in the community are great assets for this role.
Community Fridges are social sites of food education and sharing. They are housed in publicly accessible places - making fresh food that would otherwise be wasted freely available to the community. Surplus perishable food is donated by local businesses or members of the public and collected by people who need it. Fare Divide was created to to help communities in West Sussex to start and manage Community Fridges in their area to help save food waste from landfill.
