Main purpose of this role is to assist the Skipper of our boat Richmond in ensuring safety of trip boat passengers and  delivering an enjoyable customer experience. Our customers vary from families with children to seniors with mobility issues and everyone in between!

Organisation and attention to detail are the primary skill requirements together with team working. Ability to offer great customer service is essential, so a welcoming smile, outgoing personality and politeness are necessary.

Tasks:

  • Clean tables
  • Load the boat with provisions
  • Lay tables • Serve food and drinks on many trips (food is generally pre-packaged)
  • Engage with customers, where appropriate
  • Clear down boat
  • Wash dirty crockery and cutlery in Cafe commercial dishwasher and re-load on to boat
  • Complete trip provisions log

Skills

This role requires a reasonable level of fitness as light lifting is involved. Essential that cabin crew volunteers are team players. It helps if customer questions about the canal's history and environment can be answered. Interacting with customers is important to enhance the customer experience. We provide reference guides on the tables, and questions can always be referred to Skippers and Mates.

About Chichester Ship Canal Trust

The Chichester Ship Canal Trust offers daily scheduled boat trips from February till October as well as popular charter trips and activities to get you closer to the water and to nature. Relax in our popular waterside Cafe and discover our industrial heritage. We offer rowing boat hire, canoe and SUP licences, fishing and walking. From the city centre, 4 miles of towpath leads to the Harbour. Run by volunteers, accessible for all.

    Physical impairments would present a challenge, as for this role a reasonable level of fitness is required. The primary role is to ensure the safety of the trip boat passengers, and it is essential that crew are able to assist the skipper (and passengers) in the event of an emergency.

An electronic roster with protected access to all crew is provided on completion of training. Trips operate all year round with peaks at Easter, in the summer and pre Christmas. A typical trip requires a commitment of approximately 4.5 hours. All volunteers are required to undertake a short (2 hours) water safety course
