The Youth Mentor is a trusted and dependable adult from the community who we will match with a young person aged 18–24 to provide consistent encouragement, guidance and practical support alongside their existing support on the Restart Scheme.
The Youth Mentor role focuses on building confidence, motivation, routine and positive relationships. Helping young people to develop self belief, resilience and readiness for work. Mentoring complements the support already provided by the young person’s Employment Advisor and is designed to reinforce progress through regular, supportive contact.
Youth Mentors will meet with their mentee for approximately one hour per week, to build up confidence, provide structure, a listening ear, normalise anxieties about the workplace and be a positive figure in their lives.
This is a relationship based role that relies on establishing trust over time while maintaining clear professional boundaries.
The role requires reliability, commitment and the ability to work within agreed safeguarding procedures and contact expectations.
Youth Mentors are expected to act as positive role models, offering consistent support while respecting the young person’s independence and wider support network.
No formal qualifications are required for this role. We are primarily looking for individuals who have a genuine interest in supporting and encouraging young people.
Full training is provided which includes an induction training session which covers topics like rapport building, safeguarding and boundaries.
In addition you will have access to an E-Learning package and optional training pathways on topics like neurodivergence, pathways into employment/training, insecure housing support, substance abuse and more.
Youth Mentors should have strong listening and communication skills, be approachable, patient and reliable.
Being able to build positive, trusting relationships is at the heart of the role.
An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, the challenges and barriers young people face in accessing and sustaining employment. This may include but isn’t limited to: low confidence, lack of motivation, mental health, lack of work experience, unstable life circumstances, limited life admin skills.
Our organisation supports people who are long‑term unemployed to move into sustainable, meaningful employment. We work in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions to deliver the Restart Scheme, a tailored employability programme designed to help individuals overcome barriers to work and build the skills, confidence and resilience needed to secure and sustain employment.
Participants receive one‑to‑one support from a dedicated Employment Advisor, alongside access to health and wellbeing services, employability workshops, and direct links to local and national employers. Our approach is person‑centred and holistic, recognising that many people face complex interlinked challenges beyond unemployment alone.
We provide guidance with job searching, CVs and applications, interview preparation, and career goals. Ultimately we are about helping individuals put their best foot forward and achieve positive long‑term change.
Currently we are looking to recruit volunteers from our local areas in the South of England to become Youth Mentors for the young people aged 18-24 that we work with. To help them develop their confidence, build up motivation, establish a routine and normalise anxieties about the world of work and education.

The first initial meeting would take place in our local Chichester Fedcap Office (Second Floor, Midland House, 1 Market Ave, Chichester PO19 1JU) where you will meet the young person and their Employment Advisor together. After this, the meetings will take place out in risk assessed public spaces such as libraries, community spaces and (weather dependant!) local parks. All travel expenses will be reimbursed and there is a small budget available for a coffee/sandwich together once a month.
