If only these walls could talk! That’s why our volunteer room guides make such a difference, connecting our visitors to the fascinating stories of our collection and family history.

By Getting involved you could:

  • Get to know Petworth by heart and learn its secrets
  • Use your people skills to welcome and inspire visitors from all over the world
  • Be part of a varied and enthusiastic team and make new friends
  • Spend time in fabulous rooms jam-packed with history and one of the finest art collections in the care of the National Trust

What's involved?

  • Providing a warm, friendly welcome to all visitors
  • Learning about Petworth House and Park, so that you can share all that’s special.
  • Helping visitors to discover more by telling stories and anecdotes relevant to the property, collection, history and spirit of place.
  • Helping to protect interiors and collections from damage during open hours
  • Following security procedures to prevent theft or damage
  • Being responsible for the evacuation of visitors in an emergency and playing a critical role on rotation as Fire Zone Warden

Skills

This role will suit you if you are..

- Enthusiastic and friendly, enjoy meeting people, like operating as part of a team and are keen to learn. Petworth has a wide audience and there is something here for everyone, so the ability to recognise how and when to engage our visitors will be important

- Interested in Petworth - you don't need to know the history of the universe, but as a Room Guide you'll share lots of stories to engage our visitors

About Petworth House & Park

A ‘house of art’ overflowing with paintings and sculpture, a glimpse of domestic life in the historic Servants’ Quarters and Pleasure Grounds full of wildflowers and parkland where deer roam wild; with room to breathe and views to inspire the soul there is no better place for you to volunteer your time.
