Reading Coach - Chichester

Due to an increase of applications from readers we are seeking volunteer reading coaches. Once trained, our reading coaches are matched with an adult who wants to improve their reading, and will then help them work through the Read Easy phonics-based reading programme.

Coaching takes place in public places, for example libraries or cafes. Reading coaches are supported by a Coordinator and a Literacy Specialist.

Skills

  • Confident reading skills, with ideally teaching or teaching assistant experience
  • Clear communication and people skills
  • Ability to demonstrate empathy and understanding while maintaining boundaries
  • Ability to talk and listen to the person you coach in a patient, positive, encouraging and purposeful way
  • Ability to work alone seeking support where necessary
  • Reliability, consistency and an ability to manage disappointment
  • Ability and confidence to use a computer to access documents online, willingness to learn to do so
  • Commitment to Read easy values and willingness to follow Read Easy policies and procedures

About Read Easy Chichester & Arun Group

Read Easy is a charity which provides free, confidential, one-to-one reading coaches for adults who would like to improve their reading skills at their own pace and without pressure. Reading sessions are taught by fully trained volunteer reading coaches to work with readers in their own community. Read Easy Chichester & Arun is our local friendly group, based in Chichester, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

Coaches will mutually arrange their sessions with their reader, this is usually two 30 minute coaching sessions each week. Sessions are usually on a weekday during the day. Coaches will also meet with their supervising Coordinator either face to face or by telephone on a regular basis. Coaches should ideally in or close to Chichester.
